Breast Lift

A sagging breast can be a great source of insecurity for a woman. The solution to this problem is called a mastopexy (breast lift). The most common causes for sagging breasts are breastfeeding, gravity and fluctuating weight.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia at our clinic. It takes approximately two hours and is done as an out-patient procedure. The discomfort experienced with this type of surgery is usually categorized as mild.

In carrying out a mastopexy, Dr. Papanastasiou will not only raise the nipple and areola to their proper locations but he will also tighten your breast and re-shape it to give it a natural, esthetic appearance. In certain cases, when there is also a lack of adequate breast tissue, he can also perform a breast augmentation by inserting an implant at the same time as the breast lift.

Another benefit of this procedure is that the size of the areola can be reduced as, quite often, it has been stretched out, after breastfeeding.

The traditional technique requires three incisions, the so-called “anchor incisions” consisting of an incision around the nipple, a second vertical which goes down to the fold of the breast and a third one underneath the fold of the breast. More recent developments allow us to accomplish the same operation with only two incisions in most cases and in mild cases only a single incision. The two incisions are one around the nipple and a second vertical (called the “lollipop technique”) while the single incision technique is only around the areola.

Dr Papanastasiou will be in a position to advise you as to which incision is best for you after your physical examination.

Generally, bruising is rare and discoloration, if any, will last approximately two weeks. There may be slight swelling of the breasts for up to three months. You are usually functional after one week and can generally return to work at that time.
